Intel rolls out new Core i7 chip

New Mexico Business Weekly

Computers with Intel Corp.'s new Core i7 chip began being offered for sale over the weekend, first in Tokyo Saturday night and then over the Web in the United States on Sunday.

The Santa Clara, Calif., company (NASDAQ:INTC) is formally launching the new chip using its Nehalem architecture on Monday at an event in San Francisco. One of Intel's largest chip manufacturing plants is in Rio Rancho, N.M.

Computers with Core i7 chips are expected to appeal to gamers and high end users, especially fast at manipulating photos and videos.

Among other differences with existing Intel chips, those built with Nehalem architecture include an on-chip memory controller and faster connections between the processor and main memory.

Three versions of the chip are being offered, ranging in price from $284 to $999. More versions of the product from the Nehalem generation of Intel chips are expected to come next year, including ones aimed at the laptop market.
