Austin haunted house ranks among the nation's best

The business of scare is a big money maker this time of year.
From blockbuster horror movies to the latest freakish Halloween costumes, people have a fascination with fright.
That may explain why more than 18 percent of Americans plan to visit a haunted house this season, according to a survey from the National Retail Federation.
And one of the best-ranked haunted houses in the country is right here in Austin.
Industry trade Web site Hauntworld.com rates The House of Torment near Highland Mall the 6th best haunted attraction in the United States.
House of Torment actually features two different attractions: Illusion Manor, a mind-bending walk through halls where reality and illusion get blurred, and the Contagium, a replica of a post-apocalyptic city complete with elaborate sets and state-of-the-art animatronics.
The nation’s top-ranked haunted house, according to Hauntworld.com, is the 13th Gate in Baton Rouge, La. The only other Texas attraction to make the list is Cutting Edge in Dallas.
Despite the economic downturn, the National Retail Federation survey found that consumer spending this Halloween is expected to increase slightly to an average of $66.54 per person for a total of about $5.77 billion.
