Tsunami gone, but leaves sushi in its wake
Baltimore Business Journal - by Julekha Dash Staff
Asian restaurant Tsunami has closed, just one year after it opened in Baltimore.
Tsunami never quite took off the way adjacent Thai restaurant Lemongrass did, said co-owner Gavin Buckley. Customers often thought the two restaurants shared the same kitchen and having two Asian restaurants next to one another did not make sense, he said.
In the spring, the owners will open either a Latin concept called El Centro or a gastro pub, called Melbourne Standard, said Buckley, who is Australian.
Either way, the new restaurant will have lower-priced fare, with entrées at $8-$14, he said. Tsunami entrées cost as much as $25 to $30.
“Over the next few months, restaurants will be very price conscious,” Buckley said.
The owners will serve Tsunami’s sushi at Lemongrass, he said.
Buckley and his partners operate Lemongrass and Tsunami in Annapolis. The Baltimore restaurants occupy space in a historic building on Central Avenue near Little Italy, where other tenants include Mustang Alley’s bowling alley and Piedigrotta Bakery of Baltimore.
