Public TV documentary to highlight Alabamians' generosity

In 2003, Alabamians donated nearly $2.2 billion to charity, Internal Revenue Service deductions show. That outpouring makes Alabama the sixth most generous state in the nation, according to recent results of the Catalogue for Philanthropy's 2005 Generosity Index, a ranking that measures the difference between each state's adjusted gross income and its contributions to charity.
On Thursday, Alabama Public Television will premiere "Giving Makes Change," a 30-minutes documentary highlighting the state' generosity with stories of individual contributors.
"It's about telling the stories of these individuals and organizations and how they've changed their communities," says Elizabeth Dennis, project coordinator for Alabama Giving.
The program, produced by Norton Dill's Dill Productions Inc. -- in association with Alabama Giving, New Ventures in Philanthropy, Alabama Public Television and other partners -- will debut at 9 p.m. Dec. 15. It is scheduled to air a second time on Sunday, Jan. 8, at 3:30 p.m.
Alabama Giving is a consortium of companies, foundations and other groups formed to encourage philanthropy in the state.
Dennis says Alabama Giving put together a similar 10-minute video in 2002 for the Alabama chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals' annual Philanthropy Day luncheon. That video was so well received, she says, the group decided to do a longer version.
Completed in November, the documentary's debut was timed to coincide with the holiday season. "That's when people are thinking about their charitable options," Dennis says.
