State increases unemployment benefits

Birmingham Business Journal - by Haley Aaron Staff

Individuals filing unemployment claims may receive a little more assistance.

The Alabama Department of Industrial Relations announced a weekly increase of $10 in unemployment benefits.

Applicants who file unemployment claims on or after July 5 will be eligible to receive the additional $10. The increase raises the maximum weekly benefit to $265.

The increase was the last of two increases approved by the Legislature in 2008.

In addition, the federal stimulus package provided an additional $25 a week to claimants until the end of 2009.
