Thermo Fisher opens RNAi lab
Boston Business Journal - Boston Business Journal
Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. said Tuesday the company has opened a new RNAi discovery and therapeutic services laboratory at its RNAi research and production center in Colorado.
Waltham, Mass.-based Thermo Fisher (NYSE: TMO), which was formed by Thermo Electron Corp.'s acquisition of Fisher Scientific International Inc. last year, said the facility will focus on advanced RNAi screening and analysis services, as well as development of new therapeutic technologies involving RNAi. The lab will provide RNAi-based screening on a contract basis, the company said in a statement.
RNAi, or RNA interference, occurs naturally within cells and is thought to selectively silence or regulate specific genes. Researchers and drug developers believe RNAi can be developed into drug treatments that turn off genes that cause specific diseases.
Other Bay State companies involved in work with RNAi include Cambridge, Mass.-based Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: ALNY) and Worcester, Mass.-based RXi Pharmaceuticals Corp., which is partially owned by a group of RNA-interference (RNAi) experts that includes University of Massachusetts Medical School Nobel laureate Craig C. Mello.
