Citigroup Inc. intends to cut more than 50,000 jobs in the near-term, but it is unclear if and how the financial company’s back- and mid-office operations center in Amherst will be affected.
A Citigroup spokesperson said the company did not provide details on specific locations where job cuts would take place.
It is also unknown when those details will become available.
“I do not know as of today,” spokesperson Shannon Bell said. “We just don’t have details.”
The local operations center — comprised of two buildings at the CrossPoint Business Park in Amherst — employed 850 people as of Jan. 1, according to documents filed with the Amherst Industrial Development Agency. In early 2007, the company reached a deal with the town of Amherst to bring more than 700 jobs to the business park as part of a nearly $30 million project, which included building a new, 154,000-square-foot office to join the nearby 107,000-square-foot office the financial services company opened in 2006.
Citigroup (NYSE: C), which does business as Citi, already has slashed about 23,000 jobs this year. The next round of cuts will occur through layoffs, the sale of units and attrition.
