UB tapped to host research facility

Business First of Buffalo - by Allissa Kline Business First

A new research center devoted to improving public transportation for people with disabilities is being funded by a multi-million grant awarded jointly to the University at Buffalo and Carnegie Mellon University.

The $4.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research will support the new Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Accessible Public Transportation at both universities. UB professor Edward Steinfeld and his son, Aaron Steinfeld at Carnegie Mellon, received the grant and will serve as co-directors of the center.

The goal is to conduct research to help with the design and evaluation of accessible transportation equipment, information services and physical environments. Riders will be able to give feedback via a public Web site that will be developed as part of the project.
