Clinton formally nominated to Cabinet

Business First of Buffalo

New York’s junior senator, Hillary Clinton, has formally been named to become secretary of state in the Obama administration.

Clinton and several others were introduced by President-elect Barack Obama in Chicago. The reappointment of the current defense secretary, Robert Gates, was also announced along with multiple security staff nominations at Obama’s transition offices.

Clinton’s appointment will set the stage for her resignation from the U.S. Senate, where she served for eight years. She would have been up for reelection again in 2012.

“I want to thank my fellow New Yorkers who for eight years gave me the joy of a job I love,” she said in a brief statement to reporters.

Gov. David Paterson will choose a replacement to serve until 2010, when a special election will be held to fill the final two years of Clinton’s term.

But Clinton will remain in the U.S. Senate until her nomination is confirmed, giving Paterson additional time to pick a successor.

"I am consulting with a wide variety of individuals from all across New York State," the governor said in a statement. "I expect to announce Senator Clinton’s replacement when the position becomes officially vacant.”

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and Rep. Brian Higgins, D-Buffalo, have been listed among more than a dozen contenders for the interim appointment.
