Two Denison University alumni couples have donated $10 million to the Granville school, pulling its fundraising campaign ahead of goal more than three months before its conclusion.
The 2,100-student private liberal arts college on Tuesday said 1955 graduates William and Mary Ellen Bowen and alumni Connie and John Taylor, class of 1957 and 1958, respectively, donated $5 million each to the school's Higher Ground campaign. The campaign, begun in 2002 and set to end in June, had set a goal of raising $160 million but the donations put total support $8 million past the mark.
The Bowens have earmarked their gift for student scholarships, faculty fellowships, student health and counseling services and a president's discretionary fund, the school said. The Taylors' gift will support efforts including an endowed fund and athletics capital improvements.
An economist and educator, William Bowen spent two terms on the school's board of trustees. He is a president emeritus of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Princeton University. Mary Ellen has been an active community volunteer.
A businessman, John Taylor has served as a Denison board member and sits on the school's campaign executive committee, which oversees Higher Ground. Connie has served on the school's President's Leadership Council and has been an active volunteer and philanthropist.
Marks of the Bowens' and Taylors' past contributions already at the university include the William G. Bowen and Mary Ellen Bowen Endowed Fund and a Taylor House residence hall.
