Midwest to begin 50-seat jet service April 1

Pittsburgh Business Times

Midwest Airlines said Wednesday that it will launch its 50-seat regional jet service this spring that will include new Midwest Connect service between its hub in Kansas City, Mo., and Columbus, Ohio.

Beginning April 1, Midwest will upgrade its round-trip service from Milwaukee to Columbus to the 50-seat regional jets from 32-seat jets. Midwest will also upgrade two of four daily weekday flights from Milwaukee to Flint, Mich., from 19-seat turboprop aircraft to 32-seat jets, which will also be used for one Saturday round trip to be introduced.

On May 1, Midwest will launch its new Kansas City-to-Columbus flights -- twice daily weekday and once a day on the weekends. The airline will also upgrade three of four daily flights from Milwaukee to Pittsburgh to 50-seat jets and upgrade or add 32-seat jet service on Milwaukee routes to Dayton, Ohio; Duluth/Superior; and Louisville, Ky.

SkyWest Airlines Inc., a St. George, Utah, regional carrier, is launching the 50-seat regional jet program for Midwest with its first five jets entering service in April and May. SkyWest was recently signed to operate at least 15 and up to 25, 50-seat regional Canadair jets for Midwest to fly under the Midwest Connect banner.

Midwest said its Skyway Airlines regional subsidiary will continue to operate its fleet of 32-seat Fairchild 328JET regional aircraft and its 19-seat Beech 1900 turboprop aircraft. Skyway Airlines and Midwest Airlines are part of Oak Creek-based Midwest Air Group Inc. (AMEX: MEH).

The 50-seat regional jet program is part of Midwest's strategic growth plan, which the firm is touting in its effort to fend off a hostile takeover bid by AirTran Airways of Orlando, Fla. AirTran's holding company, AirTran Holdings Inc. (NYSE: AAI), has initiated an exchange offer to acquire all outstanding Midwest shares for a total of $345 million. Midwest has advised shareholders not to accept the offer.
