Pittsburgh auto show canceled after convention center floor collapse
Pittsburgh Business Times
The 2007 Pittsburgh International Auto Show, set to begin Saturday, was canceled Wednesday night following the collapse earlier this week of part of the floor at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
The Greater Pittsburgh Automobile Dealers Association, the event organizers, said the event was canceled because the Sports and Exhibition Authority, the agency that owns the convention center, could not provide access to the facility in a timely fashion.
The automobile dealers association said it hopes to reschedule the show for the spring, and said it would provide a refund to anyone who purchased tickets.
On Monday, a 20-foot by 60-foot section of concrete floor from the second floor loading dock of the convention center collapsed under the weight of a tractor-trailer and fell onto a water feature below.
Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh-Allegheny County Sports and Exhibition Authority, which operates the convention center, selected two out-of-state engineering firms to review the ongoing inspection of a failed portion of the exposition facility.
The firms selected to check on the inspection work by the convention center's design team are Leslie E. Robertson Associates of New York, and Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates Inc., based in Cleveland.
