Business development centers are valuable resource for growth
Pittsburgh Business Times
SBA loans are an essential tool for small business owners, and I was delighted to see the Pittsburgh Business Times tackle such an important issue, "Banks, consultants help secure government loans for businesses" (Jan. 19 edition).
I was disappointed, however, when I realized the story brushed over an incredible resource available to small business owners: the Small Business Development Center (SBDC).
As an integral leader in the small business community, the SBDC network is recognized for its individual, customized assistance with business and strategic planning, market research, human resources and marketing plans. Just as critical is the role the SBDC plays as a lending advisor and connector between small business owners and financing opportunities.
The 18 centers in Pennsylvania's SBDC network raised $190 million in financing for small business owners in 2005, and the University of Pittsburgh SBDC alone helped clients secure $20 million in 2006.
The Pitt SBDC is just one part of the University's Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence, which has created an entrepreneurial network throughout the region and provides education and consulting at every stage in the business life cycle.
When discussing resources that can help small businesses assess their financial options and obtain SBA loans, the SBDC should be one of the first organizations to come to mind. Working together, we can create jobs, attract business and lead the economic rejuvenation of Western Pennsylvania.
