New product for rebranded Cellomics
Pittsburgh Business Times - by Jennifer Curry
Cellomics Inc. this week released its first product under its new brand name, Thermo Scientific.
The Thermo Scientific Cell Growth and Discovery WorkCell is designed to help researchers grow and analyze cells to assist with drug discovery. Potential customers include pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and academic researchers.
"We have invested to grow the business because the customers really like the new technology," said Marc Casper, executive vice president of Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. "We are launching a new product almost immediately."
South Oakland-based Cellomics, which was snapped up by Fisher Scientific International Inc. in 2005, was rebranded because it is now part of Thermo Fisher Scientific, following Fisher Scientific's merger with Thermo Electron Corp. in November. The name on the Cellomics building changed to Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Casper will be in charge of the division.
According to Peter McDonald, a research analyst at Greenwich, Conn.-based American Technology Research Inc., the rebranding is reflective of Thermo's strategy to consolidate its smaller units.
But it goes beyond a name change.
"We have put that business unit (Cellomics) as part of a similar business within Thermo Fisher Scientific," Casper said. "The automation business and detection business are complementary to Cellomics. They are working together as a group of businesses, but we are not moving things in or out of that location."
Casper said he expects employment at Cellomics to remain around 47, and there are no immediate plans to merge with Fisher's Robinson Township operations.
