Federal minimum wage set to increase; still behind Pa., W.Va. and Ohio

Pittsburgh Business Times

The federal minimum wage will increase Thursday to $6.55 an hour, but it won't have much impact in the tri-state area.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Thursday's increase is the third covered by the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007. Last year, the federal minimum was raised to $5.85 an hour, and in July 2009, it will increase again to $7.25 an hour.

According to the Labor Department, Pennsylvania's minimum wage is already ahead of the federal minimum, at $7.15 an hour. That's scheduled to increase in July 2009 to match the new federal minimum.

West Virginia's minimum wage already is $7.25 an hour.

Ohio's minimum wage is $7 an hour.
