Rendell touts millions in state spending for Pittsburgh region
Pittsburgh Business Times
On visits to Pittsburgh and surrounding areas on Tuesday, Gov. Ed Rendell announced millions of dollars of state spending that he said would leverage new private investments.
Allegheny County
The governor announced $1.7 million in state money for business development projects in Allegheny County:
- $1.47 million for Aetna Inc. to expand customer operations and pharmacy call center in Green Tree. The health insurer expects to extend its lease at Foster Plaza and also lease additional office space.
- $141,000 for PPG Architectural Finishes to “reaffirm its commitment to Pennsylvania,” according to a statement from the governor’s office. The subsidiary of Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries Inc. (NYSE:PPG) has moved its customer service operations from Florida and Kentucky to McKnight Road in Pittsburgh’s North Hills.
- $125,000 for Haemonetics Corp. (NYSE:HAE) to expand its manufacturing operations in the Pittsburgh suburb of Leetsdale. The health care products manufacturer is building a clean room and installing new equipment at its facility there.
Washington County
Rendell announced about $4.8 million in state funding for Washington County businesses:
- $2 million to help attract companies to the Starpointe business park in Hanover Township, Washington County. Rendell expects the project to cost more than $12 million and create between 900 and 1,000 jobs.
- $1.6 million for Aquatech to expand its headquarters in Canonsburg.
- $1 million for the expansion of the Southpointe headquarters of generic pharmaceutical manufacturer Mylan Inc. (NYSE:MYL) in Cecil Township, Washington County.
- $241,000 to support the continued growth of Crown Castle Corp., also at Southpointe.
Beaver County
The governor also announced about $8.1 million in state funding for Beaver County:
- $5.4 million for glass manufacturer Anchor Hocking to consolidate its operations in Monaca. The company is currently working to increase furnace capacity and plans to hire new employees once production accelerates later this fall.
- $2.7 million to WolfPac Technologies for expansion of its production of cellular PVC trim-board product used in the construction industry.
Other projects
Rendell also announced repairs for 30 bridges in Allegheny County, 16 bridges in Washington and Greene counties, as well as 11 bridges in Beaver County, thanks to increased state spending this year.
The governor stopped in Monaca, Somerset, Canonsburg and Downtown Pittsburgh on Tuesday as part of a five-day bus tour that will make 16 stops throughout the commonwealth. In all, Rendell expects to announce $642 million in new state investments, including business development funding and bridge preservation projects.
