Heritage Valley Health System receives federal grant for electronic medical records

Pittsburgh Business Times

Heritage Valley Health System has received a $333,000 federal grant to expand its electronic medical records system, according to the Beaver-based hospital network.

The Health and Human Services grant will be used to add 50 doctors to the system. Heritage Valley began implementing an electronic medical records system in 1998 and already has 270 doctors and six nursing homes connected, according to President and CEO Norm Mitry.

Earlier this year, Heritage Valley received a $661,500 grant from health insurance giant Highmark Inc. to help pay for the system, which allows doctors to write prescriptions electronically and access patient records from laptops and hand-held computers. The industry average cost of such systems is around $10,000 per doctor.
