Vision Service Plan Inc. has signed up its 20 millionth member. Founded in 1955, the nonprofit company is the oldest and largest managed vision-care health plan in the nation. It contracts with more than 11,000 employer groups and numerous health plans to provide vision services through a network of 22,000 doctors. The Rancho-Cordova based firm signed its first health maintenance contract in 1979. By 1990, it had signed up 8.8 million members; that number reached 16.8 million in early 1995. A three-story office building is being built at the company's headquarters to accommodate continued growth.
