William Jessup offers full-tuition scholarships to veterans

Sacramento Business Journal - by Kelly Johnson Staff writer

William Jessup University in Rocklin is offering full-tuition scholarships for veterans starting this summer.

Effective Aug. 1 for the 2009-10 school year, military veterans who have served on active duty for at least three years since the 2001 terrorist attacks will have their tuition fully covered for any program that the private university offers. The scholarships apply to both the traditional program and the adult degree completion program.

William Jessup is able to offer the scholarships as a result of the passage of the new post Sept. 11, 2001 GI Bill, university officials said in a news release.

Eligible veterans will receive the cost of tuition and fees, up to the most expensive in-state undergraduate tuition at a public institution of higher learning. The amount is more than $13,000 per year in California.

Because private education is more costly than public, the Veterans Administration has added a new provision to the GI Bill called the Yellow Ribbon Program.

Through an agreement with the Veterans Administration, William Jessup will provide scholarships that pay up to half of the cost of tuition and fees that exceed the standard education benefit. The V.A. will then match the amount of the scholarship -- completely covering the cost of tuition and fees for the veteran, the news release said.

The V.A. also contributes up to $1,000 per year for books and supplies as well as a monthly housing allowance. With the combination of benefits, veterans will have nearly all their educational costs covered each term.
