First East Bay Nike store opens in Emeryville

San Francisco Business Times - by David Goll

Defying the retail gloom, Bay Street Emeryville, the popular mixed-use development opened in 2002, has announced it will add several new high-profile tenants, including Nike and J. Crew.

A 4,950-square-foot Nike (NYSE: NKE) store, located next to an existing Apple store, will have its grand opening Nov. 15 and 16. The Emeryville store will feature such new merchandise customization features as a “tee-bar” where shoppers can customize T-shirts with graphics, colors, lettering and numbering; and a “NIKEid” studio that will allow customers to create their own footwear, apparel and equipment using virtual and hands-on tools.

“We are thrilled to have world-renowned retailer Nike join the existing eclectic retail mix at Bay Street just in time for the busy holiday shopping season,” Eric Hohmann, managing director of the western region for Madison Marquette Realty Services LP of Washington D.C., Bay Street’s owner, said in a statement.

Hohmann said his center is about 94 percent leased.

“We are fortunate our center continues to attract desirable national tenants even during these tough times,” he said.

Another new tenant that debuted this fall is Fossil, the accessory retailer, which has a store of more than 1,100 square feet next door to P.F. Chang’s China Bistro (NASDAQ: PFCB).

Opening during early 2009 at Bay Street will be upscale apparel retailer J. Crew (NYSE: JCG), which will occupy a 5,000-square-foot space; and Lush, a cosmetics and bath and body product retailer.

Bay Street now has more than 60 retail tenants -- including Williams-Sonoma (NYSE: WSM), Pottery Barn, Gap (NYSE: GPS), Old Navy, H&M, Barnes & Noble Booksellers -- about a dozen restaurants, a 16-screen AMC movie theater and 400 residential units.
