Kevin Kennedy takes top spot at Avaya

The chief executive of JDS Uniphase Corp. is leaving to take the reins at Avaya Inc.

Kevin Kennedy will join Basking Ridge, N.J.-based Avaya in January, the company said.

Kennedy will remain in his CEO and member of the board roles at Milpitas-based JDSU (NASDAQ:JDSU) until joining Avaya.

"Kevin Kennedy brings to Avaya a deep understanding of the enterprise communications industry and extensive senior management experience," said Charles Giancarlo, who will step down as president and CEO,at Avaya. "He will join Avaya at a time when we are strongly positioned in our industry. Kevin will lead Avaya to even greater success and further our strategy and execution to be the premier enterprise communications partner for our customers."

Before joining JDSU, Kennedy was chief operating officer of Redwood City-based Openwave Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:OPWV).

He also spent eight years at San Jose-based Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO), most recently as senior vice president of the service provider line of business and software technologies division.

In addition, Kennedy spent 17 years with AT&T Bell Laboratories. In 1987, he was a congressional fellow to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

He is a member of the board of directors of Pleasanton-based Polycom Inc. (NASDAQ:PLCM) and San Jose-based KLA-Tencor Corp. (NASDAQ:KLAC) and a member of the Board of Regents of Loyola Marymount University.
