Netflix to stop selling used DVDs

Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal

Netflix Inc. said on Monday that it will stop selling used DVDs.

The Los Gatos-based company (NASDAQ:NFLX) announced it will discontinue the sales on Nov. 30.

Netflix has been shifting its focus to instant streaming of video from its ciore business of DVD rentals delivered through the mail.

The blog announcement prompted speculation that Netflix will now sell the disks to wholesalers, who will in turn resell them.

Last week Netflix teamed up with Alviso-based TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO) to test a service that lets Netflix customers watch video instantly on their TiVo recorders.

The deal follows one Netflix made with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. to offer video streaming on that company's Blu-ray DVD devices. It has similar deals with LG Electronics, Microsoft Corp. for its Xbox 360 videogame consoles and with Saratoga-based Roku Inc.

TiVo, for its part, has inked deals with YouTube, owned by Mountain View-based Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) and with Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) for videos and for shopping. It has also inked streaming deals with CBS Corp. and others.
