Two indicted in $179M Medicare fraud

South Florida Business Journal

Two Miami-Dade County men have been indicted in a $179 million Medicare fraud scheme.

According to the indictment unsealed Thursday, Jose Luis Perez, of Golden Beach, and Reinaldo Guerra, of Miami, ran a scam involving durable medical equipment.

The two owned and operated 21 corporations that purported to supply the medical equipment to Medicare patients.

The indictment alleges they submitted about $179 million in fraudulent claims for equipment that had not been prescribed nor delivered. Based on those claims, they were paid about $56 million, according to a news release from Jeffrey H. Sloman, the acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida.

In addition to health care fraud, the defendants were charged with aggravated identity theft for using physicians’ Medicare identification numbers without the physicians’ authorization. Guerra has been arrested, while Perez remains at large.
