Citygarden opens in downtown St. Louis

Fountains sprang to life and politicians applauded, marking the opening Tuesday of downtown St. Louis’ new $30 million sculpture garden, Citygarden.
Mayor Francis Slay expressed hope that the garden would serve as a catalyst for the development of the entire Gateway Mall and the rest of downtown.
“I’m already hearing from CEOs about how much they love this garden,” he said. “With one stroke, Citygarden has made downtown far more attractive as a place to do business and as a place to live, too, because downtown’s 12,000 residents suddenly have one of the coolest urban parks in the country in their backyard.”
The 2.9-acre garden, which occupies the two blocks between Eighth and 10th and Chestnut and Market streets, was funded by the Gateway Foundation.
The space features 24 works, including sculptures by Fernand Léger, Keith Haring, Aristide Maillol and Laura Ford.
Jim Fiala will operate the Terrace View restaurant at the garden.
Fiala also owns and operates The Crossing in Clayton, Acero in Maplewood and Liluma in the Central West End.
