Report of new Microsoft-Yahoo acquisition talks denied

The Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area

Reports of acquisition talks between Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. took no holiday over Thanksgiving weekend.

The Sunday Times of London reported Sunday that Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) was in talks to buy Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo's (NASDAQ: YHOO) search business for $20 billion.

The paper cited no sources in its account but said Microsoft would back new leadership for Yahoo itself, naming Jonathan Miller, the former chairman and chief executive of Time Warner Inc.'s (NYSE: TWX) AOL, and Ross Levinsohn, the former president of News Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) Fox Interactive Media, as possible choices.

Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang said two weeks ago that he was leaving as chief executive but staying on in a non-executive capacity.

Later on Sunday, though, the All Things Digital blog quoted Levinsohn as saying the Times article was "total fiction." It also said unnamed "key players" denying that there are any plans for the Redmond, Wash., software giant to buy the search business.
