State regulator: no online gambling in MN

Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal - by Jennifer Niemela Staff Writer

The state’s Department of Public Safety told 11 telephone and Internet service providers to block Minnesota computers from accessing about 200 online gambling Web sites, the department announced Wednesday.

The Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division of the department sent the notices Monday to AT&T Internet Services in San Antonio, Charter Communications in St. Louis, Comcast Cable in Moorestown, N.J., Direct TV in Los Angeles, Dish Network in Englewood., Colo., Embarq and Sprint/Nextel, both in Overland Park, Kan., Frontier Communications in Stamford, Conn., Qwest in Denver, Verizon Wireless in Bedminster, N.J., and Wildblue Communications in Greenwood Village, Colo.

“Online gambling was declared illegal many years ago” in Minnesota, said John Willem, director of the state’s alcohol and gambling division, adding that the state is not taking criminal actions against any of the 200 companies, because their activities might be legal in other states.
