Hotel coming to George Mason University

Under a $53.6 million public-private contract, a 170,800-square-foot conference center and hotel will be built on George Mason University’s campus in Fairfax.
The 149-room Mason Inn, located on the southwest portion of the campus, is expected to deliver in the summer of 2010.
The development team consists of Concord Eastridge Inc., which has its regional office in Arlington, and Dallas-based Balfour Beatty Construction.
San Francisco-based Gensler is designing the hotel as part of a design-build arrangement with the team, which is called University Hotel Partners LLC.
“Institutionally, we are excited about the impact this facility will have upon our Fairfax campus and we feel fortunate to have such highly qualified partners,” said Maurice Scherrens, senior vice president of George Mason University.
The Mason Inn will help accommodate university events, academic conferences and other activities like large concerts and games at the Patriot Center. Its facade will consist of metal panels, brick and precast concrete.
The complex, which will include a restaurant, lounge, ballroom and 11 meeting rooms, will be operated by Aramark Higher Education Conference Centers.
An 80-space parking garage also will be built below the conference center, creating 138 surface parking spaces. An entrance to the campus and new complex from Route 123 will also be constructed.
That work is currently under review by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
George Mason University awarded the work under an act of 2002, which lets public bodies in Virginia partner with the private sector to create educational, correctional and other buildings.
Concord Eastridge and Balfour Beatty provided services on hotel complex project over the last year as the design progressed under an interim agreement with the university.
