Homaira Akbari earned her master’s in business administration with distinction from Carnegie Mellon University, received her doctorate with honors in particle physics from Tufts University and wrote more than 50 scientific articles in international journals — all before she turned 30.
Her background has prepared her well for the top job she now holds — chief executive officer of SkyBitz, a company that helps businesses keep track of their mobile assets.
She has held senior management positions at Microsoft Corp., Thales Group and Cambridge Strategic Management Group and worked as a scientist at CERN, the European Center for Nuclear Research.
Akbari, who is of Iranian descent, has lived in Geneva, Switzerland; Paris; London; Beijing; and Cape Town, South Africa.
She has personally reached out to people in developing countries through the Knowledge Without Borders program. Akbari visits universities in Third World countries to help foster higher education, and closer to home she volunteers with Big Brothers/Big Sisters as well as at local hospitals.
“I lead by motivating people to be more accountable, not just in their responsibilities but as a member of the executive team where you are always thinking, ‘How do I take the next step? How do I get to the next phase?’ ” she says.
