Matchbox to open second location Friday

Washington Business Journal - by Missy Frederick Staff Reporter

Popular Chinatown burger and pizza restaurant Matchbox will open its second D.C. location on Capitol Hill this Friday.

The restaurant opening, announced last fall, has been much anticipated. The new location will be approximately 4,300 square feet and located at 521 8th St. SE.

The location is considerably smaller than the 10,000-square-feet location on H Street NW, which was expanded from its original 2,300-square-foot space when Matchbox grew in popularity. Co-owner Perry Smith said the new spot will reflect a “back to basics” approach.

“When we first opened up here, we were a neighborhood spot; that was before Gallery Place and people had to look to find us,” Smith said. “Now we want to get back to our roots; it’s very refreshing.”

Matchbox is most known for its popular pizzas and mini-burgers, which frequently make city “top ten” lists. Smith has hired a new chef, Shannon Troncoso, to work with overseeing chef John McArthur on the menu.

Smith and his three partners are working with brokerage firm Papadopoulos Properties on finding additional locations to expand Matchbox, though he would not give details on where or when those would open. The restaurant also has a location in Palm Springs, Calif.

The struggling economy does not cause Smith any worries about his expansion plans.

“We’re not fine dining; you can really get a good value for an average check of $22 to $27,” Smith said. “Capitol Hill is really in need of a place like us.”
